In an effort to improve the power generation in the Mindanao grid in the Mindanao area, TWO Aboitiz unit and the Wärtsilä Finnish group are working together to build a 49-megawatt (MW) energy battery storage device in Maco, Davao de Oro.
Aboitiz Power Corp. said in a news release on Thursday that the device would be their first battery management project to be implemented at its Therma Marine Plant, Inc. (TMI).
The electricity supply from hydro-power projects is expected to ‘enhance TMI’s capacity to sustain its grid throughout the summer months.
AboitizPower, in collaboration with Wärtsilä and Aboitiz Construction, Inc., said it began constructing the storage system. The machine may also be attached to the grid, to a limited grid, to an output device or to an end-user to provide demand.
AboitizPower says the TMI energy storage project is the first in the world, with a hybrid model of two complementary technology.
“This is one of the 12 projects that AboitizPower aims to build for the next 10 years with a total ability of 248 MW for controlling and backup reserves. It will act as a blueprint for AboitizPower’s potential battery investments and solar hybrid power ventures,” the company said in announcement.
The company’s battling into battery technologies has been a “core factor” in its ten-year development plan to solve the power trilemma of energy efficiency, energy equity and environmental sustainability, Aboitiz Power President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel V. Rubio said.
“Battery technology offers AboitizPower a fantastic opportunity to resolve questions about electricity supply reliable, affordable and sustainable. By maintaining grid reliability, we meet our clients and communities’ requirements and promote economic development,” he said.
In 2015, in the context of the reserves for both main and secondary use, The Energy Regulation Commission (ERC) released a resolution classifying the BESS as a supplier of frequency control services (FCAS).
“The inclusion of BESS as a modern ancillary utility source for FCAS will contribute to the effective running of the grid,” said the committee adding that BESS operates sophisticated and dynamic grids all over the world through the machine operators.
AboitizPower is an investor company listed in electricity production, delivery and retail facilities of the Aboitiz Community. It also has delivery services in the three main island groups in the region.
