MERRYMART Consumer Corp. intends to deliver smart lockers under a new initiative named MBOX, with the aim of deploying 5,000 self-service lockers with full-time connectivity by 2030.

MerryMart’s consumer technology portfolio will begin with the MBOX market.

“We believe that MBOX would boost Filipinos’ online purchasing experience and provide customers, couriers, and merchants with a more easy, reliable, and safe option for shipping and receiving packages,” said MerryMart chairman Edgar “Injap” J. Sia II in a statement on Thursday.

Packages, including post office boxes, can be retrieved and dropped off at the convenience of the consumer or the delivery staff through MBOX Smart Lockers.

Receivers will be informed of parcel delivery with a pick-up code sent via mobile text message or a note from a mobile app available for iOS and Android.

Sending parcels and returns can be handled with the MBOX App, which may also have MBOX Smart Locker pick-up choices to avoid people receiving their deliveries at the same time.

“MBOX Smart Lockers will allow couriers to become more successful and deliver more packages in the same amount of time as seen in countries with an already developed Smart Locker network,” according to the group.

Many packages may be shipped to the same address at the same time. The lockers will therefore remove the need for face-to-face communication.

“This pandemic has resulted in a record increase in deliveries, highlighting the need for a contactless, reliable, renewable distribution alternative,” Mr. Sia said.

MerryMart Chief Financial Officer Hannah Yulo-Luccini emphasized how businesses like Grab, foodpanda, GCash, PayMaya, Lazada, and Shopee have used consumer technologies to become a part of daily life.

“We’ve also seen their respective market share and sales rise at an unprecedented rate. MBOX, we believe, would accelerate and supplement this natural evolution, broadening MerryMart’s sales streams,” Ms. Yulo-Luccini added.

MerryMart would initially install 100 MBOX Smart Lockers in Metro Manila areas, MerryMart branches, shopping centres, LGU halls, condominiums, subdivisions, and office buildings.

“We foresee MBOX being a must-have in virtually every strategic location in the country,” Mr. Sia said.
