A payline follows a drawn path across fixed symbol positions. A ways game usually counts matching symbols on adjacent reels under the stated direction, without using one drawn line. A cluster game counts a connected group. Those are common patterns, not universal rules, so open the selected game's Info panel.
What a payline looks like
A fixed payline joins one position on each reel. A game can have one line or many. The win normally has to follow an active line and the direction stated in the rules. Some games always enable every line. Others let you choose the number of lines, which can change the total bet.
The game keeps the listed paths active. Check what the displayed total bet includes.
The line count can affect coverage and cost. Confirm it before pressing Spin.
How a ways game reads the reels
Ways systems commonly look for matching symbols on adjacent reels. Many start from the leftmost reel, but the live rule can set another direction. A symbol may count in more than one position on a reel. That is why the game can advertise hundreds or thousands of ways without drawing that many lines on screen.
Where clusters differ
A cluster game may ignore left-to-right reel paths and instead require touching matching symbols. The rule should say whether diagonal contact counts, how large the group must be and what happens after symbols disappear. Do not apply a rule learned in one cluster game to another title.
A 30-second screen check
- Open Info, Help or the paytable before the first spin.
- Find the heading that names lines, ways, all ways or clusters.
- Read the required direction and whether symbols must be adjacent.
- Check what the total bet covers. Look again after changing lines, level or denomination.
- Find the round history so you can review a completed result later.
Why a visible match may not pay
The symbols may sit outside an active line, start on the wrong reel or have a gap between required reels. A Wild may exclude one symbol type. In a cluster game, matching symbols may not touch in the required way. The history and paytable explain the recorded result better than a screenshot taken halfway through an animation.
